1863 June 25: List of Men in Town of Clifton Subject to the Draft

June 25, 2013

A “list of persons subject to military duty” who lived in the Town of Clifton in Pierce County in 1863.  As we learned in a recent post, the forthcoming draft would be done by town (township) rather than by county.

The entire document has been transcribed below. It is followed by a digital image of the first page of the original document, which is in Pierce Small Series 32, records of the Town of Clifton Assessor, at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, University Archives and Area Research Center.  Notes that were made after the original list was compiled are in bold and italics.
