1863 October 17: Status of the Draft
Following is a short article on the draft from The Polk County Press of October 17, 1863. Much more news of the draft is coming next week.
From The Polk County Press:
THE DRAFT.—The Draft in this State,—so says the “Hudson City Times,”—”is announced to come off on the 25th inst. The quota of this State is 14,000.” We have seen nothing but a circular from Provost Marshal General FRY [James B. Fry], to Gov. SALOMON [Edward Salomon] published in the Milwaukee Wisconsin, stating the 25th day of this month as the day set. We have not been informed whether we are to have a draft in this county or not, but presume there will be, as the quota of St. Croix county is given in the “Times,” which is 63, with fifty per cent added for exemptions. We are sorry we cannot give our readers more information on the subject.
