1863 November 28: List of Men Drafted in Polk County

December 3, 2013

The Polk County Press, in addition to listing the men drafted, also printed an analysis of the draft in Polk County in its November 28, 1863, issue.  As with the list of Prescott men drafted, most of these men do not seem to have served in a Wisconsin regiment.

THE DRAFT IN THIS COUNTY.—The draft in this county has fallen rather severely upon the poor class of our citizens.  Our of the whole number drafted, over one half o them are men of small means, and in some cases, large families.  Then the towns which have sent the largest number of volunteers, are called upon for the largest number of men.  St. Croix Falls which has furnished a large excess of volunteers, takes the lead, having the greatest number to furnish, while Farmington which has heretofore sent but her even quota, has but three drafted.  So with Alden and Osceola, both of which have sent an excess is called upon quite heavily—the number drafted being FIVE and SIX respectively.

We learn that our quota was fixed at the War Department, and that no official in this State, has had any hand in the matter.  We think that the draft was conducted fairly as far as the Commissioners were concerned, still the heavy quota assigned is certainly very unjust, and the injustice done us must be charged to the War Department.  Steps should now be taken to fix our quota for the January call, so that it will fall more justly upon those which are deficient in their quotas.  We trust no time, or effort,  will be wasted, but that we immediately take steps towards having matters righted in some way.  In another place will be found a list of drafted men for Polk, Burnett, Douglas, Ashland and La Pointe counties.
