Benjamin B. Comstock, originally from “Lawrens, N.Y.” [Laurens, in Otsego County] according to the roster for Company A of the 12th Wisconsin Infantry, enlisted on September 21, 1861. He died July 17, 1862, at Humboldt, Tennessee.
Homer Levings, also of Company A, announced Comstock’s death in a July 17, 1862, letter to his parents in Prescott:
Thursday 17th. B. B. Comstock, of our company, died last night in the hospital, of feber [sic]. His mother lives in Lawrence, Ostegoles, New York. He used to teach school in Prescott. He was a very good man, and was well liked.
