John E. Allen was living in Hudson, Wisconsin, when he enlisted in what became Company A of the 12th Wisconsin Infantry. During his service he was promoted to corporal and then to sergeant. Allen mustered out with the Company on July 16, 1865.
Allen’s obituary appeared in the November 17, 1904, issue of The Glenwood Tribune:
Word was received here this week of the death of J. E. Allen, at Duluth. Mr. Allen and family, consisting of wife, two sons and one daughter, resided here till last May, and were active workers in the Baptist church. The family’s friends here extend their sympathy.
