This company was originally comprised mainly of the Hudson City Guards. These are only the soldiers from northwest Wisconsin. For the full roster, see the Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, 1861-1865.
The 4th Wisconsin Cavalry was originally organized at Racine as the 4th Wisconsin Infantry and mustered in on July 2, 1861. It moved to Baltimore, Maryland, July 15-22, 1861, then to Virginia en route to New Orleans, Louisiana. As the 4th Infantry it fought at the Siege of Vicksburg, the battle of Port Hudson, and the occupation of Baton Rouge in 1862 and 1863. On September 1, 1863, it was reconstituted as the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry and spent the remainder of the war policing occupied territory in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. It returned to Madison June 3-18, 1866, almost a year after the war had ended. The regiment lost 431 men during service. Eleven officers and 106 enlisted men were killed. Three officers and 311 enlisted men died from disease.

The Civil War and Northwest Wisconsin 
My Great-great grandfather, Corporal Columbus Law enlisted and served in the 4th Wisconsin Company G. Why is he not listed in your roster? His death certificate states he was buried in Clear Lake, Polk County, Wisconsin; why am I unable to locate his grave? He was born 8 May 1840 and died 18 March 1926.
Looks like we missed everyone from the Town of Richmond! As well as some others. We have added him and will be looking through Company G more carefully soon.
Our index of the Clear Lake Cemetery says that he is in Block 52, Lot 4. Unfortunately, we do not have a plat map of the cemetery, so cannot tell you where that is. Check with the cemetery’s sexton.

My ancestor, Peter Harper was in the unit. He enlisted 20 Apr 1861 as Sergeant, promoted to First Sergeant and mustered out 02 Aug 1863 and commissioned an officer on that same date. I have info that says Film Number: M559 roll 12. Info says he was Captain in Corps d’Afrique although he was white.
All of the officers for the Corps d’Afrique units were white soldiers. Quite a few of the soldiers in Company G of the 4th Wisconsin took the opportunity to become officers by joining the Corps d’Afrique.
I found out that this was not my ancestor but it was fun thinking it was. This Peter Harper was married to a different woman than my ancestor.
