George W. Longfellow (d. 1863)

George W. Longfellow was listed as being from St. Croix Falls when he enlisted in Company D, 30th Wisconsin Infantry, on August 21, 1862.  He died April 7, 1863, in Madison, Wisconsin, from “disease.”

The following obituary is from the May 2, 1863, issue of The Polk County Press.  It says he was “one of the Big Rock Creek settlers”; Big Rock Creek was an unincorporated area very near Saint Croix Falls.

D I E D.

— At Madison, Wisconsin, April 7th, George W. Longfellow, a member of company D, 30th Wisconsin regiment.  Mr. Longfellow was undoubtedly known to many of our readers, as one of the Big Rock Creek (Polk County, Wisconsin) settlers.  He was a fine fellow, and left behind a large circle of warm friends.—Taylors Falls Monitor.
