George W. Chapin (1827-1864)

George W. [probably William] Chapin was the second child of Calvin Chapin and Susan Ann Short Chapin, born January 15, 1827, in New York. He married Sarah M. Kelley on November 3, 1850, in New Haven (Oswego County), New York, and they had five children. By 1860 the family was living in River Falls, Wisconsin, where George was a cooper.

George W. Chapin served in the Civil War, according to his death notice in the local newspaper, but we have been unable to identify exactly what unit.  He died, in River Falls, on October 7, 1864.

Death Notice in the October 15, 1864, issue of The Prescott Journal:

Mr. G. W. Chapin, of River Falls who recently went into the Government service in Tennessee as a mechanic, returned last week, and in poor health, and died after three days illness.
