George G. Varnum

George G. Varnum, of Pepin, enlisted in the Prescott Guards on May 10, 1861. He was discharged on November 2, 1861, and re-enlisted on January 4, 1864. Although a newspaper report on July 20, 1861, indicated that he was made the principal fifer of Company B— “he being the best fifer in the Regiment” —with the rank of Fife Major, he is not listed as such on the regimental roll. On April 18, 1864, however, he was promoted to Principal Musician of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on July 14, 1865.
